Co-Ed-Y is sponsored by the Kentucky YMCA. The mission of the YMCA is to encourage the spiritual, social and physical development of young people through community service, government awareness, and leadership training. Each months Y clubs are required to complete school and community service hours. RCMS Co-Ed-Y accomplishes this in a variety of ways. Students volunteer their time to work at school sporting events such as girl's and boy's basketball, football, and soccer. They also sponsor canned food drives, Easter egg hunts for the local Head Start, and many other exciting community based activities. During the month of December the Y club will be Christmas Caroling at Heritage.
As a part of the study of Government and Nation affairs, the Y club attends the Kentucky Youth Assembly and the Kentucky United Nations Assembly. KYA is a hands-on experience in the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government for teens. The students take on the roles of Legislatures, Press Corps members, Authors, Judges, Lobbyist, and Pages as they debate court cases or follow Bills through the legislative process. KUNA, is a mock United Nations where students submit proposals on worldwide issues. During KUNA students represent a country represented in the United Nations. They learn about that country's culture as well as economics and government.
Co-Ed-Y is more than just a club, it's and opportunity for students to become better informed about their country and world.
A side note: the Co-Ed-Y end of the year party will take place May 15th at the Harold White Pavilion off route 32 (right behind the lumber yard). The party will begin at 6:00 and end at 8:00 pm. We would love to have all of our members attend.
Co-Ed-Y is also offered at the High School. Penny Alderman is the advisor and we hope each 8th grader chooses to continue learning through the Y-Club.
