Short version: A fiend I knew and his partners were on a NY corner during the panic of '62 (?). No one had shit, and the only people dealing were beat artists who would arrive at one end of the block with a load of dummies, sell them out in minutes as they rolled down the street, and take off before anyone (no sniffers in those days) had time to test it out. Everyone's sick as dogs. Suddenly a car with Connecticut plates loaded with kids pulls up by my friend. "Anyone want to cop?" Naturally my pal gets in and drives off with them to investigate. Turns out the kids had a trunkload of pharmaceuticals from some factory or warehouse that they knew shit about. When the fiend looks in the trunk it's full of boxes of morphine tabs, NUMORPHAN, and lesser shit. (At this point in the original telling of the story, my friend went into a hilarious aside about how he prayed to god for forgiveness before taking the kids off...). So my buddy and his partners take the kids off and split the swag stash. Only my buddy is familiar with the numorphan and he ends up with the bulk of it. Each fiend, figuring the heat may be on the trail of such a load, light out for the sticks. To make a long story short, my pal makes the numorphan last until 1965 or so, at which time he's forced to get on one of the first MMTPs, where he's got such a habit he's put on some (for today) otherworldly dose, something like 200mg twice per day. End of story. Apocryphal? Possibly...all I know is when the old fiend told it to me you could see the drool start to form in the corners of his mouth.... Related question (now that we have so many fiends in residence): Anyone out there remember/know anything about the Great Panic to which I refer?? I _believe_ it was in '62 but I could be off by a year in either direction. When I was locked up once, I heard some oldtimers talk of it...one claimed that it was caused by Robert Kennedy locking up some Mob biggie, who in turn decided to give a display of his power by shutting down all dope sales on the East Coast. This guy said that fiends were coming out of the woodwork sick. Claimed he saw Ray Charles being led around 116th street shaking like a wet rat. Doctors and pharmacies were being hit like crazy. In the end I think RFK cut some sort of deal. Anyone have any idea if this has any basis in fact, or anyone simply with memories or stories of the Great Panic???
