You were wondering about the concentration of morphine in poppy seeds and reading OPIUM FOR THE MASSES, page 69, in which I wrote: "Poppy seeds do contain morphine in amounts >varying from 7 micrograms to 60 micrograms per gram. The >seeds contain codeine, too. This is a low potency source >for opium but it is strong enough to be used medicinally >in small animals and it's why the urine of people who eat >poppy seeds tests positive for opiates. > It also means it's theoretically possible to extract >opium from poppy seeds bought at your local grocery store. >Even if the seeds are old or have been sterilized, the >morphine remains." > As far as my dope-addled brain can remember I got that statistic from a c. 1988 book called The Pharmacology of Drug Abuse (or something like that). Anyway, it's in the bibliography of the book, which certainly does qualify as "scientific literature". I'm currently in the Yale science library doing research for my next scientific literature book. If you guys have any questions or information about opium or opium poppies, please post them here. Wherever this is. At alt.drugs, rec drugs.misc,alt.drugs.hard -- and I'll try to answer. thanx. jim hogshire
