From: excitable Newsgroups: alt.drugs.hard Subject: Pharming/scripting in foreign countries Date: Tue, 06 Oct 1998 17:02:25 GMT Hi folks. As you are all aware (see interminable threads on scoring in Mexico), different countries have different laws and customs regarding controlled substances. When traveling to a new country, I always stop in at a pharmacy and ask if they have anything for this terrible pain I have. Of course, it would be better if I knew beforehand what drugs are freely available and which are verboten. Somehow the travel books never go into detail on this point. So I thought I would start this thread to help other travelers when they need something that they can't get OTC in their home countries. Most of my traveling in recent years has been in SE Asia, so I'll comment on a few countries there. MALAYSIA - In Malaysia (as in many countries), the pharmacist has the power to "prescribe" many controlled substances. I have scored Paralgin Forte (a brand of Tylenol #3 - 30 mg codeine, 400 mg APAP), DF-118 (hydrocodeine bitartrate and 0 APAP), and Tramadol (Ultram in the US - a waste of money). The DF-118's were the best. Some pharmacies don't carry them, others do but the pharmacist won't give them to you (or to me, anyway). I found some good pharmacies in KL's chinatown, and a few out in Subang Jaya (USJ 10). I also tried scripting (via doctors) in Malaysia, and came up empty handed (or with a handful of NSAIDs) every time. I was shooting for something along the lines of oxy- or hydrocodone, but the docs just wouldn't give me anything (not even DF-118's or anything that I could get straight from a pharmacy!). THAILAND - The best place to score in Bangkok is Patpong (famous as the sex capital of Asia). There is one pharmacy deep in the main street of Patpong where they will sell you anything they have - temgesic, codeine, whatever. I would also imagine that Phuket would be a good place to find some pk's etc. VIETNAM - The problem here is that the pharmacies are not well-stocked. There seems to be a general shortage of Western-style medicine in Vietnam (at least when I was there, about 1.5 years ago). I did score some 30 mg codeine, but only after visiting about 10 pharmacies. INDONESIA - Same deal as Vietnam. I was only in these two countries for about 10 days each, so I didn't have much chance to really explore the scene. I hope someone will someday find this information useful, and I hope others will give us their experiences as well. Thank you for reading my little posting.
