It's based on the author's real life experiences as a cop who catches (several) habits. The "blue ringers" are Lotusates. I can't recall the correct spelling now and my older refs don't include it, but I believe it's a barbituate as you say (the effects portrayed in the movie then, are inaccurate). I'll check a PDR tomorrow. AS for the Kool-Aid, it had nothing to due with the ludes they were discussing... Great flick. I just wish they'd done the sex scene with luscious Jennifer Jason Leigh a bit truer to the book. The scene as described in the book (where the hooked heat shoot preludin and have rough, degrading sex) is hot enough to have gotten me tempted...... .
