They had a glass barrel, a glass or a metal plunger, and a needle that was either a bayonet or a friction-fit. The barrel had a male ground-glass fitting, and the needle had a female (cup-like) coupling which slipped over it. Those are the needles which were used with eyedroppers. Apparently, eyedroppers were PREFERRED to syringes, since you didn't need to do anything to register - as soon as the point was in the vein, the blood-pressure pushed up a little blossom as an indicator. To make up for the fact that the eyedropper's end was not large enough to make a good coupling with the needle, people wrapped shit around it - usually toilet paper. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: trab@.com Newsgroups: alt.drugs.hard Subject: Re: What size needle is good for IV? Back in the old days we used visene(SP?) droppers. They were a perfect fit and needed no shim. Other old timers made elaborate devices from baby pacifiers, lots of thread or rubber bands to hold them together and shims to keep the needle attached. Those were needed if one had a sufficient jones and needed to do massive geezes that the store bought droppers wouldn't hold. Hope that helped. Most common needle size was 26. -MC Jones
