Real chinese opium pipes are a ceramic globe with a hole in, and a
long stem. The opium is prepared and then stuck to the outside of
the globe, near to the hole. Then, the globe is heated until it
reaches a temperature that melts the opium and frees its smoke,
wihout burning the opium to a cinder. This way, the opium can be made
to last for far longer, and made to give off far more smoke than if
a flame is applied directly and continuously to the tar.

So it isn't so much the mechanism as the technique. The same techique
is used when smoking heroin. The point is to raise the temperature of
the drug to melting point, not to burn it.

maybe you missed my last reply. Go to Thailand, head north to Chang Mai
and from there take a trip to the Karen Hill Tribe near the burmese
border. You can then spend as long as you want smoking grade A opium in
the convenience of your own opium den. Its an experience that I would
wholeheartedly recommend. 10 bowls in an evening is more than enough to
take you into beautiful dream states. If you prefer the processed shit
(H) then hang out in bankok back packers area (kao San Road) there are
plenty of 'opportunities'. This I would never recommend, first because
if you get busted your life is OVER and secondly coz its shit.

Southern India is also good for opium. Great memories of endless train
journeys thru' India (24-36 hrs duration), with a ready supply of edible
opium to make the journey even more magical.
