No, I can vouch for the fact that it isn't a myth. I feel another
McDermott story coming on.

I once knew some friends who were chemist robbers, lived in a
first floor flat. Like all good junkies, they would throw the
garbage out the window into the back yard -- which eventually
became knee deep in crap. This also applied to the stuff that
came from what used to be known as the DDA cabinets -- the place
where the chemists were obliged by law to keep the good stuff.

So, one day when all the _real_ dope had been used up and we were
getting a little sick, a pal and I went a rummaging in the
garbage and came up with a fistful of Di-hydro-codeine ampules.
Of course, we'd read the Burroughs stuff, but these were AMPOULES
and ampoules are made to be INJECTED, surely.

So, bish bam boom, up they go. While it didn't kill us, it sure
was nasty. A horrible swollen red face, itchy as all hell, no
real high to speak of (hardly surprising as we'd gone through a
pile of pharmaceutical heroin and morphine in the previous few
weeks.)

Anyway, I never did that again.
