No one knows how long it takes for or under what circumstances long-lasting damage to the brain's endogenous opioid system occurs (ie "the point of no return"). It's safe to say though that if you genuinely like opioids and are not simply repeating the experience for other reasons that you are in significant danger of continuing to pursue them- pursue them to the detriment of most of the rest of your life. Some people manage to continue to use sporadically or occasionally for many years without getting into problems or becoming physically dependent. However, no one knows which users of opioids will be able to do this and which will not. If you like it enough to repeat it, I'd say be very careful... =================================================================== From: (Peter McDermott) Subject: Re: skin popping to mainlining smack Date: 1995/06/29 newsgroups: alt.drugs.hard crystllthr@aol.com (CrystlLthr) wrote: >In a typical user, how long does it take to go from recreational skin >popping to more serious use such as mainlining? How long is a piece of string? I started off shooting it in the vein. Quote from Burroughs: "I have used junk in many forms: morphine, heroin, dilaudid, eukodal, pantopon, diocodid, diosane, opium, demorol, dolophine, palfium. I have smoked junk, eaten it, sniffed it, injected it in skin-vein-muscle, inserted it in rectal suppositories. The needle is not important. Whether you sniff it smoke it eat it or shove it up your ass the result is the same: addiction" If you do find the Holy Grail, please let us know... =================================================================== From: Them@There.edu (Who) Subject: Re: Addictive qualities / potential [opiates] Date: 1995/08/05 newsgroups: alt.drugs.hard >>True fact. When one has had significant habits before and is given access to "unlimited" quantities of heroin, it's _very easy_ to build up real oil-burners. In my own experience I could go from clean to a gram a day of 75% pure in the course of a couple of weeks (this in Asia where price was virtually inconsequential). Few people thesedays have such opportunities outside of source or major transit countries, but in pre-prohibition days such habits used to be common, perhaps even standard. I believe that research will show that given such access, most people would top out at around one gram per day of diamorphine (say four quarter-gram shots per day), as it's around such levels that receptor saturation occurs. ==================================================================== From: (Peter McDermott) Subject: Re: Heroin Withdrawal Date: 1996/12/08 newsgroups: alt.drugs.hard In article <19961207034600.WAA06156@ladder01.news.aol.com>, masherx@aol.com wrote: >Can someone with some experience please give me some insight? Three weeks isn't long enough to get yourself a habit. However, if you don't quit now you will almost certainly find yourself with one in the future. And I don't mean 'quit now and resume using at some later point'. You've made the leap from occasional to daily use. The next step is continual daily use. A very tiny number of people make it back to occasional use from where you are now, but the chances of it happening are very slim. So, make your choice. Quit now, or embrace the beast. Personally, I couldn't care either way which choice you make. Do you? .
