A woman asks the runes why she has been suffering the touch of death so frequently in recent days and tosses the runes. The first toss shows a shrouded sun symbol and a strength rune, while the second shows a blank side and a harvest rune. As a blank side accompanied by a harvest rune is a modifying pattern meaning "something in the past", and a shrouded sun symbol combined with a strength rune is the pattern called Betrayal, the woman grows very suspicious of the sorcerer who hunted beside her over the past week...! However, as the sorcerer has left recently for Icemule, the pattern is ended-- and the modifier permits her to know that all is well now.
A warrior seeks to know why a pretty young ranger pays him no heed. The first toss is a blank side accompanied by a joy rune, while the second rune is a sun symbol followed by a joy rune. The modifier of a blank side with a joy rune indicates that the other pattern refers to a specific person, and the other pattern is the pattern of Love-- in short, the warrior realizes that the ranger is already in love with someone else, and that, in all likelihood, the love is returned. Embarrassed, he backs off.
A bard wishes to know what course should best be taken in relation to some recent, highly unsettling events that he has experienced. He knows that what he has observed is highly secret, and that he will be destroyed if he reveals them-- yet knowledge is an ache on his heart. The first toss of the runestones reveals a shrouded sun symbol with a protection rune, and the second reveals a blank side accompanied by a retreat rune. Knowing that the second toss is a modifier indicating that he should reverse the meaning of the first toss, the bard reverses the meaning. As the shrouded sun symbol combined with a protection rune indicate Lethe, or forgetfulness, the bard knows that he must remember always what happened, even if he never speaks of the matter.
