Avowing
by Tanager Skydancing

For Tolwynn... who, in the end, did look back.

I slipped from the real world to a waking dream.
The wind around me sang laments through the trees...
I rose from my homeland in a flutter of scarlet feathers.
I never looked back.

The clouds above me danced a stately waltz
To wrap a halo round the blazing soulstone sun.
The sea below me shivered cold and blue:
I never looked back.

And in this dream, my strength was torn away.
The grieving wind slashed through and left me bleeding towards night--
And in the darkness a caring voice whispered, ‘Now go,
And never look back.’

There are tears that fall softly but never fall seen--
There are words never spoken that always go missed.
I wept in my dream and I knew that some hopes burned to ash,
But I never looked back.

Subtle are the variations in rose-petal veining,
The amber harvest moon dyes the sea dark as wine.
The black lacewing butterfly flies five hundred miles to fall,
But never looks back.

Hoofbeats in the distance trickle past and fade.
I rolled over with the dawn’s light in your bed,
Heard your breathing soft with sleep beside, and knew
I could not look back.

The Drakes may rise, the sun may split and shatter
And drown in rainbowed silvers in the heaving scarlet sea
And all Elanith fall-- but, while you still remain by me,
I’ll never look back.
