The Tale of Aled
by Rastavan Eveninglight

The air was clean
And the grass was green
When young Aled rode away
And a lonely tear
Showed his dear love's fear
As she touched his cheek that day
Saying. . .

Dear love, dear love
The war's so far away
Here the grass is green
And the air is clean.
Dear Aled can't ye stay. . .

His eyes shone bright
With a somber light
As she eased her hand away,
And a matching tear
Showed the young lad's fear
As he heard his Brenda say. . .

{Chorus}

Still he turned his sight
To the dawning light
As he rode his steed away,
But his dear love's song
Echoed loud and strong
All through the dying day. . .

{Chorus}

On the battle field
Rang the clash of steel,
That was heard for countless days,
But the warrior's cries
And the dying men's sighs
Would slowly fade away,
And he'd hear. . .

{Chorus}

It was late one night,
And the gruesome fight
Had been raging through the day,
And a call rang clear
For a volunteer
To lead a small brigade

So with a smiling eye,
He agreed to die
If such would be his fate.
But as the cheers grew loud
A much darker shroud
Came across young Aled's face
As he heard. . .

{Chorus}

And no one has learned
For not one returned.
To tell his tale that day.
But before he died
They heard Aled's cry
That to battle led the way.

And when they had won,
'Neath the blazing sun
They found Aled where he lay.
Lying on his chest
Was a general's crest
And all will swear they heard him say. . .

{Chorus}

And his Brenda cried
When she heard he'd died,
But that night she saw his face.
And his eyes shone bright
With a somber light,
But of pain, there was not trace,
And he said. . .

Dear love, dear love,
The war was so far away,
But here the air is clean,
And the grass is green,
And it is here I'll always stay. . .

My dear Brenda. . .
Here I will always
stay. . .
