From Aardvark On Down: Elanthia's Native Fauna

Elanthia is full of many strange beasts, ranging in size from the tiniest gnats to the enormous (and terrifying) roa'ters.  This guide is written not for hunters, but for travellers, that they may more fully know the creatures they pass in the wonderous world in which we thrive.

For the purposes of this guide, an "animal" is a non-sentient living creature that is not a plant.  If it talks, uses tools, or casts spells, it's not an animal; if it was manufactured  with tools or magic, it's not an animal.

I welcome contributions to this guide-- Elanthia's very large, and there are many places I don't dare tread!  Please contact me with any creature you feel should be added to the guide or with any information you can provide that I haven't included.  (Well, you might want to wait on that until I've gotten some more work done myself, but I do appreciate any help people feel like giving!)  Be careful to include your Elanthian evidence-- without evidence of a creature's existence, I will be forced to accept it as a legend.  More information on what precisely consitutes evidence may be found here.

A

Aardvark
Appearance: The aardvark has long, donkey-like ears on a thin, elongated head.  Its long snout ends in a small, tubular mouth from which a remarkable eighteen-inch, sticky, purple tongue periodically shoots out in pursuit of ants.  Its small, clever eyes roam the area in a constant search for unwary ants.
Evidence: A peaceful aardvark wanders freely through the town of River's Rest.
Other notes: "The aardvark narrows its beady eyes.  With an irritated snort it glares at you.  It flicks its tongue in your direction!  Disappointed to discover you are not a very large ant, the aardvark turns away."

Albatross
Appearance:
Evidence: Albatrosses may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes: By legend, the spirits of lost sailors sometimes take on albatross form in order to continue their journeys over the ocean.  As a result, killing an albatross will invoke the wrath of Niima... and where the Wavedancer's wrath turns, the Destroyer's wrath follows.

Ant (common)
Appearance:
Evidence: The aardvark of River's Rest is always on the hunt for succulent ants, and often finds them.
Other notes:

Ant (fire)
Appearance:
Evidence: From time to time, the aardvark of River's Rest accidentally snorfles up a fire ant and then sneezes to expel the unwanted insect.
Other notes:

B

Bear
Appearance:
Evidence: Bear cubs may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:

Bear (Agresh)
Appearance:  The Agresh bear is all muscle and bone and presents a formidable appearance when standing on her hindlegs.  She is a tawny gold in color allowing her to blend more easily into her surroundings or at least as much as a 600 pound bear can.  The deadly claws that tip each front paw completes the total package of death known as the Agresh bear.
Evidence: Agresh bears roam through an apple orchard near Ta'Vaalor.
Other notes:

Beaver
Appearance:
Evidence: Beavers may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:  "Beavers have constructed a dam in a shallow spur of the river below.  The dam, in turn, has created a large pool behind it to facilitate the growth of pond weeds, a favorite beaver food.  A pair of beavers move about in the pool and on the shore, carrying sticks in their mouths to add to the dam, diving into the pool to feed, or dipping down to perhaps inspect the sturdiness of their efforts or enter their lair for a rest."  (from a spot along the Locksmehr River Trail)

Bee
Appearance: A striped yellow-and-black insect with wings and a stinger that makes a humming or buzzing sound as it flies.
Evidence: Bees may be seen at work in Hearthstone's rose garden.
Other notes:  Bees harvest nectar to make food for the hive, and transform that nectar into honey.  Their hives are also the source of beeswax, good for making candles.

Beetle (giant water)
Appearance:
Evidence: A giant water beetle lives in one of the tanks in the River's Rest Zoo.
Other notes:

Beetle (jadeback)
Appearance:

Other notes:

Burro
Appearance:
Evidence: Burros can be seen pulling carts of ore up from the south in the city of Kharam-Dzu shortly after getting off the Glaesen Star.
Other notes:

Butterfly
Appearance: Butterflies come in many different appearances, and many different sizes, from large to small.  If you stand in the Hearthstone herbalist's long enough, you may (as I did) observe spotted, purple, blue, and a number of other colors of butterflies.  Those fortunate enough to participate in the Butterfly Festival of 5101 observed a truly astonishing variety-- all colors of the rainbow, plus black, white, and gold-- in Wehnimer's Landing, River's Rest, and Ta'Illistim.  (Possibly Solhaven as well, though I am uncertain.)
Evidence: Butterflies may be readily observed in many parts of Elanthia, and the Butterfly Festival each spring celebrates their number and variety.
Other notes: During the Butterfly Festival of 5101, a number of people captured living butterflies.  If not locked within closed containers (a mistake I greatly regretted), these butterflies survived after the festival, and some carry them with them today... but the butterflies have become oddly listless, and will no longer fly, preferring simply to perch or rest wherever they are placed.

Buzzard
Appearance:
Evidence: An agitated buzzard may be seen on the overland trail leading between Wehnimer's Landing and Ta'Illistim.

Evidence: Pale crabs inhabit the sea tunnels in River's Rest and attack people.

Hummingbird
Appearance: "A sudden burst of color appears amongst the iris and upon closer inspection, it appears to be a tiny bird, wings furiously in motion and nearly impossible to see.  It pauses in its flight to sip nectar from an obliging iris and is gone in a flash, leaving behind only a memory of a moment to treasure."
Evidence: Having seen hummingbird earrings, I compared them with this creature that I spotted in the Heartstone rose garden and presumed that the two were the same.  Hummingbirds may also be seen in part of the Port Valley neighborhood in River's Rest.

I

J

Evidence: Kestrels may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:

Kiramon
Appearance: The kiramon has a mobile head with huge, bulging, eyes that sparkle in a faceted clustering around the lidless perimiter.  Protruding from the massive head is a vicious-looking snout with insectile mandibles, while the back of the cranium is a distended, two-lobed case.  Remarkably powerful rear legs jut backward from an extremly hard, resilient, exoskeleton-like body, that seems to be in constant motion.  Though the middle legs have evolved away long ago, the front legs end in strong opposing claws and knobby-jointed fingers.  Stunted wings flap uselessly from its long cylindrical body.
Evidence:  Kiramon roam Teras Isle and an area in Ta'Illistim.
Other notes:

Koi
Appearance: "Several dozen large koi swim aimlessly about in one of the tanks, occasionally stopping to search the sandy bottom for anything edible.  Their white bodies with patchworks of gold, red, black, orange and yellow must have made some of them extremely valuable to their owners."
Evidence: These koi may be seen in a tank in the River's Rest Zoo.

Other notes:

Leopard (black)
Appearance: At first glance, the black leopard has pure black fur but upon the shifting of light, faint auburn rosette patterns fade in and out of sight against the sleek darkness.  The only visible part of the leopard when she's stealthily hidden in the wilds is her deeply-toned amber eyes, which are always gazing warily at her surroundings.  With the ability to retract her claws into her large padded paws, the black leopard is able to conceal her movement and stalk silently behind her prey with great success.
Evidence: Black leopards roam through an apple orchard near Ta'Vaalor, attacking those who near.
Other notes:

Lion
Appearance:
Evidence: Lion cubs may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:

Lion (plains)
Appearance: The plains lion is a muscular and athletic animal.  Covered with a uniform coat of soft, golden-brown fur, his long, lithe body is equipped with powerful legs, displaying a proportionately greater difference in the length of the forelegs compared to the extenuated hind limbs.  The feline's head is topped with white tufted ears, and a very long, balancing tail completes the lion's physique.
Evidence: Plains lions roam the foothills near Ta'Vaalor.
Other notes:

Lizard (Gnomish)
Appearance: Appearances vary wildly; the only thing certain is that every lizard is unique and that they all weigh roughly five pounds.
Evidence: A number of people who voyaged upon the Dhu Gillywhack came home with these odd lizards, collected by the gnome named Frazerarg.

Other notes:

Raven
Appearance:
Evidence: Ravens may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:

Rolton
Appearance: "This is obviously a prime example of the beast of legend, the fiend of song and tale.  Known near and far as an implacable enemy of early settlers, it was this ferocious sheeplike creature that earned the epithet of Warrior-Killer in its sordid past.  The rolton is covered with a dirty, matted, disgusting-looking grey pelt that might once have been white and is still abysmally smelly.  However, it isn't this trait alone that gives her such a terrifying appearance.  As the animal bleats at you, it is then you get a view of the 'maw of death', with its long, curved incisors that gnash and gnaw.  The critter has some nasty-looking hooves as well."
Evidence: Roltons wander grassland areas in River's Rest and Wehnimer's.

Evidence: Giant albino scorpions infest Mraent Cavern in Zul Logoth.
Other notes:

Seathrak
Appearance: "A dark shape becomes visible through the starboard panel as it slowly moves ahead of the ship.  Soon, the long snout and red eyes of a seathrak are recognizable, then the clawed limbs, and finally the long, powerful tail as the creature paces the ship."
Evidence: You can see seathraks through the glaes bottom of the Glaesen Star.

Appearance:
Evidence: Silk is a fairly common fabric in Wehnimer's Landing, and silk clothing may be purchased at Dara's Salon.

Snail (overgrown)
Appearance: The overgrown snail crawls around slowly on its single lubricated foot, leaving a slime trail behind wherever it goes.  Its grey body has a greenish undertone, and its skin is rough and raspy.  Perched atop its back, the home of the overgrown snail is a thick, rounded shell nearly three feet in diameter.  The shell spirals into a central point.  The overgrown snail peers out from a pair of grey, lidless eyes set upon twin stalks.  Some individual with too much time on his or her hands has painted a green, red and black tartan design on the snail's entire shell.
Evidence: This odd creature crawls through the town of Zul Logoth.

Other notes:

Wolf
Appearance:
Evidence: Wolf pups may be purchased as  pets from the Grass Menagerie in Zephyr Hall.
Other notes:

Wolverine
Appearance: Possessed with a ferocious nature far out of proportion to its size, this wolverine appears to be an extremely vicious opponent.  Swift and agile, with claws and teeth backed by muscles like coiled springs, the wolverine will take on and defeat foes three times its size.  Even stout boiled leather is oft times no match for its powerful claws and ferocious bite.  You see a touch of foam about its mouth, which may indicate some type of virulent disease.
Evidence: Wolverines wander the grassland area south of the gates of Wehnimer's Landing.
Other notes:

Woodpecker
Appearance:
Evidence: At one point along the Locksmehr River Trail, the sounds of a number of woodpeckers drilling for insects in elms can be heard.
