Jesus our Model(This is a series of essays on various teachings of LORD/Jesus other than Sermon on the Mount, and on how Jesus lived his life on Earth.) |
LORD :You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason with your neighbour, lest you bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the LORD. [Lev 19:17-18]
LORD :For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of GOD, rather than burnt offerings. [Hosea 6:6]
(Note : Ancient Israelites would offer sheep/cattle as sacrifices to LORD, in the
form of peace offering, burnt offering, etc.)
LORD : Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart." [Zech 7:9-10]
Jesus : You have heard that it was said 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You, therefore, must be perfect , as your heavenly Father is perfect. [Mt 5:43-48]
And one of them, a lawyer, asked him (Jesus) a question, to test him, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the LORD your GOD with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, Your shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." [Mt 22:35-40]
(Note : LOVE GOD = do the commandments of GOD. LOVE JESUS = keep the commandments of Jesus. [John 14:21, 14:23-24])
John (a disciple of Jesus) : GOD is love, and he who abides in love abides in GOD, and GOD abides in him. [1 John 4:16]
Jesus : A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. [John 13:34-35]
Jesus : This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [John 15:12-13]
Jesus (after he had washed the feet of his disciple at the last supper) : do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. [John 13:12-17]
Jesus : ... even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. [Mt 20:28]
John (a disciple of Jesus) : By this we know love, that he (Jesus) laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does GOD's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. [1 John 3:16-18]
Peter (a disciple of Jesus) : Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart. [1 Peter 22]
Jesus : The kingdom of GOD is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, 'Lo, here it is!' or "There!' for behold, the kingdom of GOD is in the midst of you. [Luke 17:20-21]
Jesus : When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at the right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee? And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. [Mt 25:31-46]
Jesus : Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great. [Luke 9:48]
Paul (Note : Paul was an early Christian. Many of his letters were collected into the New Testament) : Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. [1 Cor 13:4-7]
