Roger's
Saintly duties

(Thanks
from the Salisbury Journal)
Respected Salisbury referee
Roger East was the fourth official at St Mary's on Monday for Saints'
friendly clash with German champions Bayern Munich. The highly entertaining
game, played for the inaugural Ted Bates Trophy, ended in a 1-1
draw after Michael Ballack's second half strike cancelled out Brett
Ormerod's early effort. Saints stalwart Francis Benali (pictured
above with East, Saints boss Gordon Strachan and coach Dennis Rofe),
made his farewell appearance for the club, and received a deserved
standing ovation when he came on as a late substitute.
EG
Newman Trophy
Mr
EG Newman was a former member of the South Wilts Referees
society who also served for many years on the Wiltshire FA and the
Salisbury & District League management committee. A trophy in
his name is given to a promising referee belonging to the society.
Among the recent winners of this award has been Mark
Saxby (2001-02), Colin
Jones (2002-03) and Iain Parsons (2003-04).

Mick
Bevan Memorial Shield
Mick Bevan at the
time of his sudden death in 1978 at the age of 41 years, was the
Referees Association representative to the Wiltshire FA. His family
donated a shield to be awarded by the Wiltshire FA to the outstanding
junior referee in the county between the ages of 19 and 28. Among
the most recent of winners belonging to the South Wilts society
was Nigel Homer
(2002-03).
