Mac Emulation: How to use PC Fusion 3.0
An emulator is a piece of software (or hardware) which immitates another machine or plateform. Fusion is a software Mac emulator which allows you to boot operating systems and run games and applications made for macs on your PC. This guide will show you step by step how to setup the Fusion on your PC to run MacOS 7.6 or MacOS 8.0.

1 - Required Downloads:
First, you need to download the following things off our tools page:

  • PC Fusion 3.0
  • Either the MacOS 7.6.1 (recommended) or Mac OS 8.0 provided bootfile.
  • HFV Explorer
  • A Quadra System rom

2 - Installation and Setup:
After you've downloaded all this, just unzip it using Winzip or some other decompressor.

Now run Install.exe from the Setup directory in the Fusion 3 archive.

Just follow the installers instructions, intall it in any direcory. We'll use the default c:\fusion

Copy Mac.rom and MacOS76.hfv (or MacOS8.hfv) in the fusion directory c:\fusion or where ever you installed it. And run the HFV explorer.

Go into 'File' and choose 'Format New Volume'. Save the volume as hard1.hvf in the directory where you installed Fusion and Make it 200MB. Label it 'My Programs'. This will be where you will install Mac software you download. Screen Shot

Now you can run Setup.exe from the directory where you installed Fusion

Type 'y'
Use these following settings for each field, leave everything else to the default setting:
  • ADVANCED->MACHINE ID->Quadra 950
  • VIDEO->SELECT->VESA_DIR.FVD
  • FLOPPY->INTERNAL 0->OFF (or ON if you plan on reading mac floppies)
  • DEVICES->SELECT->MACOS76.HFV (or MACOS8.HFV) press select a second time and choose HARD1.HFV
  • ROM FILE->SELECT->MAC.ROM

You're now ready to run Fusion for the first time, Click on 'LAUNCH EMULATOR'

TIP: If you get a 'Unimplimented trap' error, try changing the MACHINE ID to something else (e.g. Quadra 750) until it works.

3 - Running Fusion:
Now that you've got MacOS running, you can set it to an appropriate resolution using by going into the apple menu->control pannel->Monitor->Options and setting an appropriate resolution and color depth. 800x600 or 1024x768 should be fine. Screen Shot

If you want to increase color depth past 256 colors, you must use the VESA_REF.FVD video driver which doesn't work well with all graphic cards.

Now to shut down Fusion, just select shut down in MacOS' Special menu.

4 - Downloading and Installing Mac Software:
First, let's prepare MacOS to unstiff downloaded files:
Launch Fusion by running Fusion.exe.

Go in the 'MacOS761' (or 'MacOS8') drive, in the 'Bin' directory, then the 'Stuffit Expander 4.0.2' directory and select 'StuffIt Expander'.

While 'Stuffit Expander' is selected, go in the 'File' Menu and choose 'Make Alias'. Drag and drop the 'Stuffit Expander Alias' on the Desktop. Screen Shot

Run Fusion again, open the My Programs drive, drag the MacPaint.SIT file and drop it on the 'Stuffit Expander Alias' on the desktop. The file should get unstiffed and you may now double click on 'Mac Paint' to run the program. Screen Shot

5 - Fusion's limitations:
Although Fusion is a very good emulator it does have some limitations. First, don't expected to run all mac software you throw at it, it does not perfectely imitate a mac.

You cannot run native PowerPC software on Fusion, if you try to run something and get a 192 type error, it means it's software made only for PowerPC macs.
