The 2007 Reunion of the Swetland Family Association

What Happened at the 2007 Swetland Family Association Reunion at Brocton, NY?  Did you miss out?

We had a small group come to find more information about their family ancestry and history of the Brocton, NY area.  This was a great chance for them to meet other Swetland/Sweetland/Sweatlands and people with interest in the Swetland ancestry

The area was chosen during the 2005 Reunion as it was the site of the first documented Swetland Family Reunion of September 15th, 1896.

Friday (July 20)

A portion of the group gathered at the Days Inn of Dunkirk-Fredonia at 3:00 PM.

We then drove to the previous home of Dr. Benjamin (B.S.) Swetland that he built and ran his doctor’s office from.

Dr. B.S. Swetland built this home himself by hand using stones he hauled in from Lake Erie.   After years of minimal maintenance you can see the house is nearly being reclaimed by Mother Nature and the structure is in need of repair.  The current owner is an elderly woman of minimal income and is unable to restore the home to its original condition.

This is the remains of the original home that Dr. B.S. Swetland had hand built that was destroyed by a fire.  This structure is located behind and to the left of the current home.

In this photo you can see that house exterior is entirely constructed from round stones that he hauled to the site from Lake Erie by horse and wagon.

In this photo you can see that the base structure of the original home was entirely constructed of large squared stones that were hauled to the site by horse as well.

From Dr. B.S. Swetland’s former home we then visited the Portland Evergreen Cemetery where several Swetlands reside.

Do you recognize any of the past family members in the photos below?

We then relaxed and enjoyed a light supper at the local American Legion.

Here are Maps & Directions from our “tour” of Friday night.
