From an enthusiast...

When you're in Wareham collect a copy of the Purbeck Cycleway leaflet. This useful map shows a lot of good routes but the fact is that all the minor roads in the area are excellent for cycling. Some of these are:

1. There-and-back routes to: ·

The long sandy National Trust Studland beach. (Turn right at the northern end of the village and take the underhill road.) ·
The Square & Compass pub in the picturebook village of Worth Maltravers. ·
The RSPB reserve at Arne, overlooking Poole Harbour. ·
Lulworth Cove via Church Knowle (on route 4). Stop at the Weld Arms in East Lulworth.

2. Isle of Purbeck Route (12 miles).
From the cottage, take the main road out of Corfe towards Swanage but turn right, up the hill towards Kingston. Go through Kingston and Langton Maltravers and join the Swanage road again before turning left, signed to Studland. After crossing the railway, turn left back on the underhill road back to Corfe, past the naturist campsite and some even more stunning scenery to Corfe.

3. The Heath, Ridge, Frome Valley route.
Take the road towards Arne but turn left towards Stoborough. Turn left and then cross the main road past West Holme towards Wool. Take the left-hand turn marked Wood Street. This hidden valley road takes you to the Wool/Lulworth road. Turn left towards Lulworth and left again through Combe Keynes. Go down the hill into East Lulworth, turning right at the bottom and then left again up Whiteway Hill (steep) and then down again to Church Knowle and Corfe Castle.

4. A wonderful ride round the District of Purbeck - but it's 47 miles long.
From Corfe, start out along the Isle of Purbeck Route (our Route 1). Once you have returned to Corfe turn right onto the Wareham road, and then take the next right towards Arne. This road takes you out over original Dorset heath. Turn left at the next junction towards Wareham and proceed through the town, going past the station on the road towards Bere Regis. Just short of BR, turn left towards Briantspuddle. Turn left to Moreton, where Laurence of Arabia is buried and make your way to Chaldon Herring. Cycle to Winfrith Newburgh and then turn left to West Lulworth and right towards East Lulworth. Before East Lulworth, turn right up the rather steep Whiteway Hill. Ride past the end of the Tyneham road and at the next junction take the road past Steeple and through Church Knowle back into Corfe. Remember. The Lulworth to Steeple section is closed when the ranges are used for firing.

Bike storage available in the garden shed on request.
or bikes can be put outside the back door under the overhanging roof.
